Exploring the Beauty of Flint
Do not walk alone! No parties! Walk like you have somewhere to
go and always look like you know where you are going even if you are lost.
When you’re driving, keep everything in the front seat where you can
easily access them and keep the windows rolled up! We don’t need anyone breaking into
your car. While I’m driving? Are you trying to tell me that I don’t know what I’m talking about? No, of course not. Good. Now where was
I? Don’t. Yes, don’t step foot off of campus. Don’t go to any gas
station alone. What if I need gas? You won’t need it. Call me if you need to go somewhere. I believe I am capable of driving myself. That’s why I have a car. What do you know about Flint that you can drive all around town? Who
knows Flint the most? Who has lived here longer? Exactly, you have nothing.
Everything you need should be on campus anyway. If it’s not on campus, you have my number. We can go out together.
Flint can’t be that bad. I’m from Detroit, the capital of bad.
I've walked streets alone and have driven just about everywhere. People
are robbed, kidnapped and shot in Detroit just like anywhere else but I
guess I need to take special precautions when it comes to Flint. I don’t see why
because everyone seems to know everyone. It’s a neighborhood compared to home.
Downtown is home to many restaurants and the city life but encompassed with
nature’s beauty. Home is a dump compared to this. As I walk to keep up with the flow
of everyone since I should walk in groups, so many things catch my eye. What is that big ball on top
of that building? What restaurant is everyone going into?
Where are those buses headed? So much to see but I have to be more concerned about my
safety. I must be around groups at all times. I snap back into reality and catch up with
another group until I realize a trail, a pathway to another place. Do I follow this like the
yellow brick road? I must. It takes me down stairs and into a dark tunnel which scares
me. Someone could grab me, snatch me, or even kill me. This is Flint! But after I look up and
realize there is more light than darkness, I smile.
The path leads me to racing waters and a beautiful reflection
of the sun as if the sun were looking at itself in the mirror. I slowly look at everything around me
and for a second think that this place is much bigger than it seems. I start to feel like a young
child who takes his or her first steps and must adventure this new but familiar place. After
taking a drive around the city, I am definitely convinced that it can't be as bad as its
reputation.
A place is as beautiful as you see it. If you can’t look past
the bad, you will never see the beauty. We often place more emphasis on
being safe that we cannot take the time to actually see the world around us. I
believe that we fail to realize that every place, every person and every thing
has its flaw. And little do we know that a flaw can simply be a beauty that
has yet to be explored.
